LYNFORD GARDENS
reviving heritage: expert renovation of c.1800 buildings
Designed by Richard Sutton in the late 1800s as part of the extension and remodelling of Lynford Hall, the site fell into disrepair over the years. We are asked to create designs to restore the cottages, bothies, and part of the glasshouses into offices and holiday let cottages. The design maximised natural daylight through generous glazing, ensuring solar shading and natural cross ventilation. The use of materials and design created a serene connection with the surrounding green space, offering a wonderful working environment that reflects the site’s history.
The restoration of the dilapidated buildings aimed to faithfully reinstate their original appearance, such as the iron winding mechanisms for the greenhouses and orangery. New additions were carefully designed to provide holiday let accommodation, blending seamlessly with the architectural style of the original structures.
The offices incorporate original timber and metalwork details found in the ruins. Since the original roof had collapsed, a new glazed lantern and flat roof were designed. The original south-facing windows, too deteriorated to restore, were exactly reproduced, maintaining the original camber where the frames are wider at the top than the bottom.
