THE WILLOWS
sustainable living in banham: a thoughtful integration of eco-friendly design and community focus
This development in Banham, South Norfolk, created 29 properties on a 1.6-hectare site, including 3 social housing units. Located near Banham Zoo and local amenities, it was designed to blend rural living with access to village services. The design prioritised natural light, energy efficiency, and community spaces, with homes oriented southwest to reduce reliance on artificial lighting and heating.
Ecological enhancements included a newt corridor, wildflower areas, tree planting, upgraded habitats, and a regenerated pond. A public play area encouraged outdoor living and social interaction.
Challenges such as drainage and grounding overhead power cables were addressed with sustainable solutions. Collaboration with the Parish Council ensured the development met local needs.
This project demonstrates how architecture can integrate with rural settings, offering sustainable housing and enhancing the environment. The Banham development is a prime example of creating a thriving, eco-friendly community while respecting its surroundings.
