a dream realised: crafting a spacious, light-filled chalet home in thuxton, norfolk
The owner of this beautiful chalet-style home had long envisioned the opportunity to design and build her dream house. With a strong desire to create a personal and spacious living environment, she selected a unique triangular plot on a third of an acre in the picturesque village of Thuxton, Norfolk. This was more than just a house—it was a life-long ambition to create a home that perfectly reflected her needs and lifestyle.
The challenge
Building her dream home during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic presented several challenges. The fluctuating prices of materials, particularly during the height of the lockdown, made it difficult to stay within budget. Additionally, the global supply chain disruptions led to significant delays in construction, with a six-month period where no work could progress due to the wait for crucial oak roof trusses.
Our approach
The architectural team embraced the challenge of designing a spacious, open-plan chalet-style home that would integrate seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Our approach involved the following key steps:
Maximising natural light: The design focused on large windows and expansive glazing to allow natural light to flood the interior spaces, making the most of the stunning panoramic views from the back of the property. The goal was to create an airy, open-plan living space where the interior and exterior felt connected.
Open-plan living: The brief called for large, open spaces that would flow effortlessly between the living, dining, and kitchen areas. The design incorporated vaulted ceilings and minimalistic lines to further enhance the sense of space and light.
Tailored to the plot: The triangular shape of the plot posed a unique challenge, but it also allowed for creative design solutions. The layout was carefully planned to maximise the views from the back of the property, with the living and dining areas facing directly out to the beautiful Norfolk landscape.
Use of natural materials: The design incorporated warm, natural materials such as oak for the roof trusses and porch, which were key features that the homeowner wanted to highlight. Despite the delays, the use of this material added to the overall aesthetic and warmth of the home.
The result
The end result is a spacious, light-filled home that has surpassed the homeowner’s expectations. The open-plan design is perfect for family gatherings, while the large windows frame the breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, offering a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. The oak roof trusses have become a standout feature, adding a sense of craftsmanship and timelessness to the space.
This project is a testament to the homeowner’s determination and vision. Despite the hurdles, she now enjoys a home that is everything she had hoped for—spacious, light, and deeply connected to its beautiful surroundings.
The team at Clayland designed a fantastic house. There were plenty of hair-raising obstacles along the way, but they calmly guided me through the process. They even attended council meetings with me and successfully secured approval for a much larger property than was initially allowed. I'm incredibly grateful for their expertise and support. Building my own home was a dream come true, and I am absolutely thrilled with the result. The panoramic views are my favourite part—it truly feels like I'm living in nature.
